WBT (AICC)
AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based Training Committee) standards were among the earliest specifications for e-learning interoperability, originally designed for the aviation industry but later adopted across various sectors. AICC-compliant web-based training (WBTs) focuses on ensuring seamless communication between e-learning content and Learning Management Systems (LMS).
Key Features of AICC WBTs
Interoperability:
AICC standards enable content to be used across different LMS platforms, ensuring compatibility regardless of the authoring tools or systems used.
Communication Protocol:
AICC uses HACP (HTTP AICC Communication Protocol) for communication between content and the LMS.
Data is exchanged using HTTP and plain-text files, making it simple and lightweight.
Standardized File Structure:
AICC content relies on descriptor files (e.g.,
.AU
,.CRS
,.DES
,.CST
) to define the course structure, learning objectives, and tracking information. These files provide metadata about the course and instructions for the LMS.
Tracking Capabilities:
AICC WBTs track:
Learner progress (completion status).
Scores (e.g., passing/failing marks).
Time spent in the course.
Data is stored in the LMS for reporting and analysis.
Focus on Accessibility:
Designed to function in environments with low bandwidth and minimal technical requirements, making it ideal for legacy systems or global deployment in resource-constrained regions.
Advantages of AICC WBTs
Simplicity:
The use of plain text and HTTP protocols makes implementation straightforward.Reusability:
Content is reusable across AICC-compliant LMSs, reducing duplication of effort.Stability:
Reliable even on older systems or in environments with limited technical infrastructure.Industry Standard:
Pioneered standardized e-learning practices and set the stage for later standards like SCORM.
Limitations of AICC WBTs
Outdated Technology:
AICC standards were developed in the early days of e-learning and lack support for modern e-learning features, such as advanced sequencing and rich media.Limited Functionality:
Compared to SCORM or xAPI, AICC has less robust tracking capabilities and fewer options for adaptive or interactive content.Declining Support:
With the rise of SCORM and xAPI, AICC is less commonly used, and many LMS providers are phasing out support for it.
