Navigation Manager

The navigation manager enables users to configure navigation items and functions. The extent of the access can be determined for each group.

The navigation is structured in navigation categories, visualised by the icons above the navigation items. In the navigation manager, these categories are displayed as prime nodes of a structure. The navigation items within a category are subordinate nodes in the structure, accordingly, which can be sorted and restructured in any order via the toolbar or drag & drop.

Learners can, if they only have access to one navigation category, be shown horizontal navigation (refer to the "Category" section).

The order in which navigation categories are integrated into the structure matches the order of the icons in the subsequent selection of navigation categories.

Exceptions: Dashboard categories can only be used in the public section of the learning platform. Top navigations are assigned to navigation categories and will not appear in the category selection for users, either.

The system distinguishes three different navigation parts.

Per navigation item two icons can be defined: the normal icon and the hover icon, only active when the user hovers over the icon with the cursor.

Editing of a navigation item is conducted on a separate page, on which clearances for the navigation item itself and the functions in the toolbar can be assigned. The clearances can be assigned to all functions via the appropriate checkbox, or separately to one or more functions via multiselection. The available functions vary by navigation item. In some cases, no further specific clearances exist. The actual definition of a navigation item varies by the type of navigation item:

The category with the "learner" identifier can be marked as a special category of learner. If this is the case the learner sees a horizontal navigation. It can also be determined if the search function and the function to choose a navigation item as a homepage are to be available. Portal categories, top navigation or menu items cannot be marked as a learner category. The name is shown in the category selection of the icon's tooltip. It can be expanded with descriptive or explanatory text. Even self-created category icons with a size 16x16 pixels can also be uploaded. For dashboard categories, further settings options are available. The "Save start menu" function can also be deactivated in categories by removing the tick from the "Display "Save start menu" check box in the navigation category. Having done this, the save icon will then not appear only if it has been deactivated for all visible categories. If saving is permitted for one of the categories, it will thus also be displayed in all visible categories.

A dashboard category defines requests for a public dashboard. It involves the definition of an identifier which determines the start URL of the dashboard.

The selection of a client determines who will be able to view the top navigation. It will become visible for all users who belong to the selected client. This only applies if the top navigation is used in the internal section. For top navigations in public dashboards, the assignments are conducted via the dashboard category.

Menu items are located in categories or structuring elements within categories. Available navigation items:

The navigation item serves as a junction for expanding another level that includes additional navigation items.

Selection of any learning-platform function is possible. If a dashboard category or a top navigation category was selected prior to the creation, then the function is not available.

The system provides the special functions "Home" (homepage) and "Feedback" (administrator contact form), for instance, which can be integrated in the top navigation. All offered special features are available for main and top navigation. These special functions refer to the default icon set of UIKit. The user has the option to upload icons and hover icons to customise the look of the navigation:

Main catalogues or sub-catalogues can be selected. Also, a main skill folder can be chosen, which enables the listing of catalogue contents by skills. Further, more specific settings can be made. For each language, different catalogues and main skill folders can be selected.

For each language, a different dashboard page can be included.

Referrer to a website outside the learning platform. It will be opened in a pop-up window. Window parameters can be defined (e.g. pop-up size). For each language, a different link can be included.

For each language, a separate HTML page (or more than one, in ZIP format) can be uploaded, to be opened in the tab or in a new pop-up window. The homepage (possibly within a ZIP container) has to be indicated for this purpose. If using this function in a tab, unintended side effects with the learning platform can occur, depending on the content of the uploaded HTML page, especially upon the display of multiple processing steps, linking to further contents and embedding plug-in components.

The "special function", "portal page" and "OE profile" menu types cannot be integrated into the learner categories.

For some functions, further configuration parameters that further specify the properties of the subsequent navigation item can be attached in the input field "Settings".

By entering &restrictedmode=true access to the participant manager of courses is restricted. Changes can only be made to participants for whom an executed clearance exists.

Usually, users can only see the contents of folders for which they possess an execute clearance at least. By entering &acldisable=true all catalogue folders are displayed to users, without said restriction. If course templates are included in catalogues, all courses of the given templates are displayed as well, as long as their properties (e.g. end date) do not prevent it. Entering &checkAclOnTemplateInstances=true is used to specify that only those courses are visible for which the logged-in user has executed authorisation. The &bookingdisabled=true parameter switches off the registration, pre-bookings and add-to-wishlist buttons Thus, a catalogue can be released for different target groups (with and without registration options).

By entering &destination=fe_course_all, the "All Courses" view is immediately displayed when the navigation point is clicked on. Alternatively, &destination=fe_course_all_actual leads to current courses, &destination=fe_course_all_archived leads to learning history and &destination=fe_course_all_cancelled to cancelled courses.

Entering &bookingidentifier=1&bookingidentifier=2 etc. only courses equipped with an identifier upon booking are displayed. Identifiers are determined in the system configuration. E.g. 1 may stand for "compulsory course". A further parameter allows us to select which identifiers the course search shall be filtered for automatically upon accessing the page: &desiredbookingidentifier=1. The two parameters are especially suited for using a second, more specific navigation item in addition to the course overview and wishlist of a learner.

This entry is displayed with the user's image. The header of the drop-down displays the user's name.

Navigation categories can be enabled and disabled. Disabled navigation categories are not displayed to users in the navigation.
